There’s a moment every September when I step outside, catch that first crisp breeze off the water, and think, okay, this is the best time of year. Having grown up on the Cape and now calling Marshfield home, with a place in Plymouth too, I’ve had plenty of chances to figure out what makes autumn here so special. Grab a cozy sweater and a coffee, because here are my favorites.
Walk Where the Views Are Gorgeous
If you only do one outdoor outing this fall, make it World’s End in Hingham. The rolling hills, tree-lined carriage paths, and views of the Boston skyline across the water are hard to beat when the leaves start turning.
Closer to the beach, a stroll along Duxbury Beach or Green Harbor in Marshfield in October is peaceful in a way summer never is. The crowds thin out, the light turns golden, and you can actually hear the waves.
Visit the Farms and Farm Stands
This is where I’d spend a Saturday morning. Sauchuk Farm in Plympton is a must, with a farm stand full of pumpkins, fresh cider donuts, and kettle corn, plus a fall corn maze. CN Smith Farm in East Bridgewater is a favorite for pick-your-own apples and warm cider donuts. And in Norwell, Hornstra Farms turns out seasonal ice cream flavors like apple pie and pumpkin. Yes, ice cream in October is absolutely allowed.
Cider donuts tend to sell out on busy weekends, so go early and bring cash just in case.
Soak Up Some History in Plymouth
Plymouth is one of my favorite places to bring visitors. Wander the waterfront, see Plymouth Rock, tour the Mayflower II, and browse the shops downtown. Pilgrim Hall Museum and Plimoth Patuxet Museums are great rainy-day options. As Thanksgiving approaches, the town really shines with festive events and a true “America’s Hometown” feel.
Cranberry Country
We live in cranberry territory, and harvest season is a sight to behold. A bog flooded deep red is something you’ll want to photograph. Keep an eye out for local harvest events, and pick up fresh berries to bake with at home.
Lighthouses and Harbor Towns
Scituate is a treat in the fall. Walk around the harbor, check out the lighthouse, and settle into a café with a view. Cohasset is another charming stop, with its picturesque common and harbor. Pair a seaside walk with a bowl of chowder and you’ve got a perfect afternoon.
A Little Note from Me
Fall is also a wonderful time to think about your next move. Maybe you’ve been wondering what your home might be worth, or you’re ready to find a place where you can enjoy this lifestyle year-round. Whatever your plans, I’m always happy to chat, with no pressure at all.
Until then, get out there and enjoy the season. If you have a favorite fall spot I missed, send it my way!
